Pedro Goncalves Under Scrutiny Despite Strong Record at Yanga SC

The Head Coach of Young Africans SC, Pedro Gonçalves, can be said, based on statistics, not to have ‘failed’, but what brings him under scrutiny is when his team is compared to last season’s Yanga.

Pedro was officially introduced on October 25, 2025, on a day when Yanga SC was on the pitch playing against Silver Strikers in the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League, while he followed the match on television.

He officially began his duties with a 2–0 victory against Mtibwa Sugar in a Premier League match, a win that laid the foundation for a positive run in the league.

So far, Pedro has led Yanga in a total of 26 matches across four different competitions: the Premier League, CAF Champions League, CRDB Federation Cup, and the Mapinduzi Cup.

According to statistics, out of those 26 matches:

  • He has won 17 matches
  • Drawn 7
  • Lost only 2

Additionally, the team has scored a total of 48 goals while conceding only 8, indicating strong defensive solidity and attacking efficiency.

In the Premier League alone, Pedro has guided Yanga to 10 wins out of 14 matches, with 4 draws. In the CAF Champions League, the team has recorded 2 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses.

In the Mapinduzi Cup, Yanga emerged as champions with 3 wins and 1 draw, while in the CRDB Federation Cup they have won both matches they have played.

Three consecutive draws in Premier League matches put his job at risk, but Yanga’s management later allowed him to continue after an evaluation, reinforcing the technical bench by bringing back Assistant Coach Abduhamid Moalin.

His team still sits at the top of the league standings, and he has promised to bring the league title back to Jangwani for a fifth consecutive season.
