Cape Verde Continue World Cup Fairytale With Impressive Draw Against Uruguay

Cape Verde continued their historic journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after earning a 2–2 draw against Uruguay in a Group H match played in Miami, United States.

Many expected two-time world champions Uruguay to secure a crucial victory after opening their campaign with a 1–1 draw against Saudi Arabia. However, Cape Verde once again proved they are no pushovers, extending their impressive run in the tournament.

Cape Verde took the lead in the 21st minute through Kevin Pina. The goal was the nation's first-ever World Cup goal and came from a stunning long-range free kick that left many fans in disbelief.

Uruguay responded before halftime with goals from Maximiliano Araujo and Agustin Canobbio, giving them a 2–1 advantage and appearing to put them on course for victory. However, Cape Verde refused to give up. In the second half, Helio Varela capitalized on a mistake by veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to equalize and make it 2–2.

The result further strengthens Cape Verde’s reputation as one of the most exciting surprise packages of this year’s World Cup. After opening the tournament with a goalless draw against Spain, they have now earned another valuable point against a nation with a rich footballing history.

With the draw, Cape Verde move to two points and remain in a strong position to challenge for qualification to the knockout stage. Their final group match against Saudi Arabia will be decisive, with victory potentially securing a place in the next round.

For a nation of fewer than half a million people, Cape Verde has become a remarkable example of how determination, organization, and discipline can compete with some of football’s traditional giants.

Their World Cup journey has captured the imagination of fans around the world, and the dream of reaching the knockout rounds now looks more realistic than ever.
