Chelsea have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra in one of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window. Reports indicate that the two clubs have reached a verbal agreement, with Atalanta set to receive more than β¬55 million plus a sell-on clause for the player.
Palestra, 21, is expected to sign a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge and become the first signing under Chelsea's new head coach, Xabi Alonso, since his appointment.
Chelsea managed to secure the deal at the final stage despite Inter Milan having long been considered the frontrunners for the Italian defender. However, rapid negotiations over the past 24 hours reportedly changed the course of the transfer and convinced Palestra to choose Chelsea.
In addition to Inter Milan, other European giants including Liverpool and Arsenal had been closely monitoring the progress of the Italy international. Chelsea, however, demonstrated their strength in the transfer market by beating their rivals to the signature of one of Italy's most highly rated young talents.
Palestra impressed during his time at Atalanta and is viewed as an important part of Xabi Alonso's new project, with the Spanish coach expected to make significant changes to Chelsea's squad ahead of the 2026/27 season. His ability to operate as a right wing-back, combined with his contributions in both attack and defense, made him one of the most sought-after young defenders in Europe.
If everything proceeds as expected, Marco Palestra will become a significant addition to Chelsea's squad, with supporters eager to see whether the signing marks the beginning of a major rebuilding process under Xabi Alonso.
