South Africa has made new history in world football after qualifying for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time, following a 1–0 victory over South Korea on the night of June 24, 2026. The win saw Bafana Bafana finish second in Group A with four points and advance to the Round of 32, where they will face Canada on June 28 in Los Angeles.
The match was highly competitive, with South Korea pushing hard for an equalizer even after introducing their captain, Son Heung-min, in the second half. However, South Africa's defense stood firm and repelled every attack from their opponents. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams experienced one of his quietest matches thanks to the outstanding performance of the defenders in front of him.
The decisive moment came in the 63rd minute when substitute Tshepang Moremi produced an excellent run down the left flank before delivering a low cross to Thapelo Maseko. The young forward made the most of the opportunity, calmly striking a precise left-footed shot to score the only goal of the match.
The goal made 22-year-old Maseko one of the youngest scorers in South Africa's World Cup history. At the same time, Relebohile Mofokeng delivered an impressive performance, using his pace and creativity to trouble South Korea's defense throughout much of the game.
This achievement erases the painful memories of 2010, when South Africa failed to advance beyond the group stage despite hosting the tournament. Under coach Hugo Broos, Bafana Bafana have now broken that barrier and become the first South African generation to take the nation into the World Cup knockout rounds.
Now, the attention of South African fans and the entire African continent will turn to the June 28 clash against Canada. Bafana Bafana have shown that dreams can become reality through hard work, discipline, and courage, while their historic World Cup journey continues to capture the imagination of millions of fans around the world.
