Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, has revealed that the Tanzanian Government has paid TSh 104 billion towards preparations and securing broadcasting rights for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
Makonda made the remarks on September 24, 2026, while addressing journalists on preparations for AFCON 2027, the Miss World pageant and various issues concerning the arts sector. He said the investment forms part of Tanzania’s preparations for the tournament, which will run from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
According to Makonda, the Government intends to use AFCON 2027 as a platform to promote Tanzania internationally while also developing the sports and tourism sectors and other economic activities linked to the tournament.
Preparations in Tanzania are continuing across various areas, including the renovation and construction of sports infrastructure. The Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports’ 2026/27 budget speech stated that renovation work at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium had reached 95 percent, while construction of the new stadium in Arusha had reached 77.5 percent at the time of the report.
