Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has officially confirmed Cristian “Cuti” Romero as the new captain of the Albiceleste, taking over the role from Lionel Messi following the forward’s retirement from international football.
Scaloni explained that Romero was already third in the captaincy hierarchy behind Messi and Nicolás Otamendi, leading him to hand the defender the responsibility of leading Argentina into a new era following Messi’s departure. “The captain will be Cuti. He was already third after Leo and Ota,” Scaloni said.
Romero has been an important part of Argentina’s squad in recent years, playing a key role in the team’s Copa América, Finalissima and 2022 World Cup triumphs. Scaloni also identified Emiliano Martínez, Rodrigo De Paul and Lautaro Martínez among the players who could wear the captain’s armband when required.
Romero’s appointment comes as Messi prepares to play his final match for Argentina against Benin on October 6, 2026, at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has confirmed the fixture as part of the farewell to Messi after more than 20 years of representing the national team.
